We are currently in the process of negotiating to be a sponsor for a number of different community events. Our only guideline is that each event should, in some way, promote the sense of belonging and unity for the respective communities. NewsHK Community Fund Selects the inaugural HK Community Scholar award winnersColumbian High School seniors, Alexandra V. Fagundez and Prisca Osuji have each been awarded $5,000 college scholarships. This scholarship is awarded to those high school seniors for outstanding commitment to their community and superior academic achievement. Alexandra and Prisca have demonstrated their outstanding commitment to enhancing the sense of belonging and unity within the Maplewood and South Orange community through the many hours of community service performed for the benefit of others. They have logged many volunteer hours including; Columbia High School library, peer counseling, girl scouts, YouthNet, food pantries, green/environmental activities, coaching, and local cultural events. These awards will be presented at the Columbia High School senior recognition ceremony to take place on June 2, 2010. HK Community Fund Scholarship ProgramTom Kerns, President of HKCF, met with the superintendent of the Maplewood/South Orange school district to discuss implementing the HK Community Fund Scholarship Program as one of the scholarships available to Columbia High School students. Also in attendance was the head of the high school guidance office, Jennifer Giordano, who discussed the process to include the HK Community Fund Scholarship Program and the resulting HK Community Scholar award as part of the high school’s scholarship offering. The Scholarship will be available for qualifying seniors this coming 2009/2010 school year. About UsHK Community Fund is an innovative program that joins the neighbors of Maplewood and South Orange in meeting its educational, community and cultural needs. Since we have launched we have created a number of different initiatives that are benefiting our community. * HK Community Fund will manage the newly created Fund for Recreation and Cultural Affairs of South Orange. FRCA is a privately funded program that provides financial assistance to help families who would not otherwise be able to afford to enroll their children in the Township of South Orange Village’s Recreation and Cultural Affairs programs. * HK Community Camp Fund. We have created a new Camp Fund to reach those kids who are missing out on the great learning that happens at the wondrous summer camps across the region.
